Unified Messaging
Unified messaging can be defined as the idea of combining all the available types of communication into one single media, that will be accessible for all people. To be more exact, unified messaging is the integration of voice sending and retrieval, email messaging, fax, video conferencing into a single interface, which could be a mobile phone, pocket pc, internet-enabled computer. All of this is done by a unified messaging server. Microsoft Exchange 2007 unified messaging as well as siemens unified messaging products are examples of that.
If you think about it, the purpose of communication in general, is to break down physical boundaries. For example, the Internet is breaking down distance and time barriers, because people from different parts of the world can exchange information instantly and work on a given project. The concept of unified messaging is the way forward, it's the evolution of communication, because right now we have reached a very high level, but there are still problems to be solved and new ideas to be implemented. Considering the concept of unified messaging, it's obvious that its complete realization relies on strong standardization and assuring there is interoperability between all communication products. These products could be from different manufacturers, but must be able to work together.
Every single person on this planet relies on messaging. There are people on this earth that will give millions of dollars just to be able to be reached anywhere at any time. They could be on a vacation in Nepal or skiing in the Alps. It doesn't matter, the point is that people want to be notified of messages, but at the same time have full control of when exactly they can be reached. We all want privacy and it's our right to do so. So the subscribers of the unified messaging system can define when and how they want to be reached.

One of the benefits of unified messaging is that subscribers can check all the different places from a single interface. Using just one device, you can check your fax, email. voice mail, basically all available means of communication. New technologies integrate voice into email (voice mail service), such as a voice-recognition software in which you are unable to write an email, but you can call a number say what you want to write and the software will just send the message. Unified messaging is something that the ordinary user is beginning to feel. The phone and the PC are becoming tools to make purchases. The latest technologies are about to turn our phones into devices from which we can pay all our bills, make international transactions, buy products. The mobile phone is becoming a transaction terminal. You will be able to use it to make bank transactions, pay your order at a restaurant or book tickets for a concert. |
