How Ip Telephony Works
IP telephony is the best choice that any business can make in an attempt to reduce costs and increase quality of the service. IP phones also known as VoIP has really took off ever since it was introduced into the market a few years ago. An IP telephone allows you to make cheap phone calls over the internet. It consists of converting all audio signals into digital packets which are then encrypted and send through the internet to be unpacked and decrypted at the other end. The process of converting the audio signal into digital packets is called digitalization.
The main advantages of digitalization are that it can provide better voice quality and the digital signals are easier to work with than their analog counterparts. Analog signals are continually varying signals, while the digital representation relies only on two levels - 0 and 1. The analog-to-digital conversion is made by a device called A to D converter. The A/D converter periodically senses (samples) the level of the analog signal and creates a binary number or series of digital pulses that represent the level of the signal. Digital signals are more resistant to distortion (noise) and they are much easier to manipulate. In old analog signals, it's sometimes impossible to remove the noise. But because digital signals only have two levels, during the regeneration process, the noise is removed.
When you talk, your voice creates sound pressure waves which are converted to electrical signals by a microphone. When the microphone senses a large sound pressure wave (loud audio), it produces a large (higher voltage) analog signal. Then the produced analog signal is periodically sampled and converted to a number of pulses. The larger the analog signal, the larger the number of pulses produced. This number can be counted and send as digital numbers. At the other end, a digital receiver detects the high or low signal levels and uses them to recreate the new digital signal without noise. This process is called regeneration.

When the digital signal is being transmitted over the internet, it's first compressed. This process allows Internet telephone service to have lower data transmission rates than standard telephone service while providing for good quality audio. IP telephony packets are transferred over the internet using a technology called packet routing. Packet routing involves the transmission of packets through intelligent switches (called routers) that analyze the destination address of the packet and determine a path that will help the packet travel towards its destination. Routers are responsible for figuring out where the packets should go, based on information tables (called routing tables) that help them to determine the best path for them to forward each packet to.
